Event Description:

Dr. Schilit will share his secrets on detecting companies attempting to hide operational problems by using a variety of financial shenanigans. Such tricks can involve (1) earnings manipulation (2) operating cash flow distortions and (3) company-created metrics -- all of which put a positive spin on a company's deteriorating underlying economic performance. The presentation also focuses on the "breeding ground" for shenanigans and highlights both quantitative and qualitative screens to help detect the bad actors.

Dr. Schilit is an international leader in the detection of early warning signs of accounting fraud and weak corporate governance. He is the author (with Jeremy Perler) of Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports (McGraw-Hill) 3rd Edition, April 2010. He has been a leading spokesman before Congress, the SEC, and media outlets about causes and early warning signs of accounting tricks in public filings. Dr. Schilit recently founded the Financial Shenanigans Detection Group, LLC. In 1994, he founded and ran a global forensic accounting research organization, Center for Financial Research & Analysis (CFRA) until 2005.
He frequently lectures on the subject of financial shenanigans to securities analysts, university students, investors, bankers, lawyers, and insurers.
Speaker: Michael J. Mauboussin, Chief Investment Strategist at Legg Mason

Event Description:

In a groundbreaking new book, Michael Mauboussin examines a paradox of critical importance to decision-makers everywhere: Why is it that the correct process for making good decisions – especially when stakes are high – clashes with how the mind actually works? Follow the author as he explores the disconnect and outlines creative – and often counterintuitive – strategies to override the conflict and help you THINK TWICE. Michael’s presentation, punctuated by colorful stories from business, sports, science and the everyday, promises to be instructive and entertaining. The takeaway: New insights into common “decision traps” that can open the way for you to make smarter choices in every aspect of your life.

Michael is the author of Think Twice: Harnessing the Power of Counterintuition (Harvard Business Press, 2009) and More Than You Know: Finding Financial Wisdom in Unconventional Places—Updated and Expanded (New York: Columbia Business School Publishing, 2008). More Than You Know was named one of “The 100 Best Business Books of All Time” by 800-CEO-READ, one of the best business books by BusinessWeek (2006) and best economics book by Strategy+Business (2006).
